Arrow Fast Five: Q&A with Van Kong
Arrow’s Van Kong heads up quoting for our security vendor portfolio across Sydney and Melbourne. Get to know more about Van in this quick Q&A.
1. Tell us about your career in IT to date, including your current role at Arrow.
I started in IT more than 10 years ago with a stint at Grey’s Auctions as an auctioneer selling ex-lease IT equipment – a fantastic experience and one that I recall fondly. My journey with Arrow began a little over seven years ago as an Internal Sales Representative (ISR). Since then I have witnessed the business continue to grow and expand to where it is today. My current role as the Security ISR team leader involves heading up a team of about 10 ISRs based out of both Sydney and Melbourne. My team is responsible for quoting some of the most exciting solutions from our security vendor portfolio. It’s a challenging role with many unique problem-solving opportunities presented on a daily basis, however in the end it is a rewarding one. I enjoy the team environment and the opportunity to have a hand in the development of the ISRs.
2. What has been your proudest moment at Arrow?
My proudest moments have never been my individual achievements but the achievements of those in my team. Nothing fills me with pride more than when a colleague from my team is acknowledged for their outstanding work, whether it be from vendors, partners or from within Arrow itself.
3. If you could swap roles with anyone in tech for a day, who would you choose and why?
Elon Musk. He is a visionary who inspires imagination and I’m a huge believer that often times, imagination or more precisely ‘lack of imagination’ is what holds us back from achieving more. One can’t help but be drawn towards his accomplishments thus far as he is certainly pushing the boundaries on what is possible in the world of technology.
4. What technology area excites you the most and why?
Security. As the way we do business continues to evolve, security has never been more important in delivering safe and secure business outcomes for companies and their customers. The technology segment changes at a very fast pace and there are always new and exciting developments around the corner.
5. What would you do if you weren’t working in IT.
I’d most likely be in the arts, perhaps a video editor or an illustrator doing paleoart. I’ve always enjoyed art and the act of expression and creation has always been an important outlet for me. I’d probably also start a tiny house village somewhere in the sticks.
At Arrow, we are passionate about translating complex technology into tangible solutions that guide innovation forward.
