Arrow Fast Five: Q&A with Sam Chandra
Get to know more about Arrow’s Sydney-based Channel Development Manager, Sam Chandra.
1. Tell us about your career in IT to date, including your current role at Arrow.
My first role in IT was in a sales role at an Apple store. From there, I moved into distribution at Express Data before moving into vendor land at Symantec as a Partner Manager, selling security solutions to partners and end-users.
From there, I joined Dell as a Senior Account Manager for three years before joining Arrow in 2013 as a Business Development Manager. Today I am a Channel Development Manager and am responsible for managing and growing partnerships of Arrow’s key enterprise partners and mid-market specialists.
2. What has been your proudest moment at Arrow?
My proudest moments have been to do with my contribution to staff growth and development. I was heavily involved in Arrow’s Internal Account Manager Initiative, which was designed to grow local talent and provide career progression opportunities within our sales team.
As part of the initiative, I provided regular coaching, knowledge transfer and development opportunities to a colleague who has since gone on progress his career as a successful Channel Development Manager. He has grown his patch more than 200% and went on to be awarded Arrow’s Most Valuable Player. I’m really pleased with the outcome of the program. It’s great to see it be so successful, first time running, and I’m looking forward to getting involved with the next one.
3. What do you see as being the biggest partner opportunities in 2020?
Security (inside and outside the perimeter) and cloud billing optimisation. At Arrow, we help partners’ security journey by aligning their offering to credible frameworks such as the ACSC Essential Eight or CIS Controls.
As for cloud billing, most organisations have already embarked on a journey to cloud migration. With our ArrowSphere platform, we enable partners to lower their cost of transaction and to simplify the complexities that often come with cloud billing, so they can focus on their customers and be more profitable.
4. If you could swap roles with anyone in tech for a day, who would you choose and why?
Satya Nadella at Microsoft would be my first choice. I’m fascinated by the mission he set out for Microsoft when he took over. I’d be curious to see his view, and see the combined impact for an organisation of Microsoft-size ($300 billion), with a mission that is to empower every person and every organisation on the planet to achieve more.
As much as it’s important to deliver quarterly earnings to the shareholders, it’s satisfying to know they do so in a way that has a positive impact on the world.
5. Finally, what would you do if you weren’t working in IT?
I have a left-dominant brain and tend to like numbers more than arts. I usually can remember phone numbers better than people’s names. Given this, I’d probably be working in finance or banking, where numbers, money and risks are involved!
I also like jazz music and bossa nova to name a few styles. So perhaps the idea of owning a music lounge closer to retirement would be possible, ideally in the Caribbean 😊.
At Arrow, we are passionate about translating complex technology into tangible solutions that guide innovation forward.
